Artists and Art

Christopher has said on several occasions that he loves art. He has called it a "great feeder of the soul and mind" (Aug 30 2000). When asked what "excites you, turns you on," Christopher responded: "A well-crafted piece of art - from a play to music to painting - that I understand and yet is so intricate you can experience it again and again" (Apr 13 2000). And, when he was asked to name one of the unread books in his personal library that he really would like to get to, Christopher picked Art: A World History (Apr 24 2000).

When asked to name his favourite pieces of art (either human-made or naturally occurring phenomena), Chris listed Michelangelo's "David, the boxing painting by Benton, a beautiful carpet, political cartoons...let's face it, too much to even consider. Natural: Monument Valley, NE fall, thunderstorms, waves, mist in a valley, view of the Earth from space, a dragonfly...and then we can talk about the human body" (Sept 16 2000).

He has been to the Hollyhock House in L.A. and finds it a "great idea, a little too heavy for my taste - I like it a little more open" (June 30 2000). He also visited the renovated Museum of Modern Art, saying, "We went, and the line went around the block, so we bagged. But, we'll be back. Looks cool" (Mar 20 2005). In New York, Chris's favourite museum is the Metropolitan Museum of Art (July 7 2000).

Christopher's favourite playwrights are Albee, Shepard and O'Neill (Mar 26 2000), but when asked whom he considers to be the "new and important" American playwrights, he replied, "I am so out of that loop that I can't even give a fake answer" (Sept 18 2000). When it comes to actors, Christopher says that he is not in awe of the people themselves, but is in awe of "some performances and things done" (Jan 3 2000).

Painters that are special favourites of Chris or Sherman include "Dali, Ernst and Rivera" (Mar 28 2000). The painters Christopher prefers are "Dali, Van Gogh, John Curren" (Feb 27 2004). When asked to name his favourite "paintings, sculptures and artist," Chris listed the "Expressionists, Dali and Van Gogh. Painting of John Brow" (June 26 2000). His favourite style of Expressionism is the German variety (Aug 9 2000). Christopher explains that he enjoys Dali because "his exactness strikes me and the paintings remind me of nightmares" (Aug 9 2000).

When doing a feature on Chris, In Style Magazine highlighted several works of art that are in his home. Roger Eberz is the artist who created the snarling dog painting in the magazine's photographs (Feb 4 2003). Christopher says that he is a fan of the artist because "I know the guy and I want him to believe in his talent as much as I do. That's it" (Jan 12 2002). On a painting of a man and woman that was also hanging in his home in the photographs, Christopher says, "The artist's name is Kimberly Austin (Perry Farrell wrote a song about her). She's out of San Francisco and has one leg. This is part of a series of bald nudes. Photo images are burned into three different pieces of cloth. Very haunting images attracted me and the artist intrigued me. Actually wanted to do a documentary on her, but a certain gallery that was exhibiting her show said yes, and then put up 1000 restrictions, so…" (Feb 15 2002).

On whether he is artistically inclined, Christopher has said, "I think - without overt proof - that I could sculpt" (Aug 30 2000; Oct 1 2000) and "I'd like to try sculpting" (Apr 24 2000).

Christopher is keenly interested in architecture; he admires Chinese architecture, Gothic-style architecture and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright (June 26 2000; July 10 2000). In fact, when asked what interests, aside from art, he shares with Sherman, Christopher names "architecture" and "love" (Mar 28 2000).
