Diet and Exercise

To stay in such good shape, Christopher says that he does a "lotta working out" (May 8 2001), something that Christopher says "doesn't get any easier" (Mar 2 2000). He once mentioned that sticking to his regime was "very tough these days" (Mar 2 2000). When he needs to motivate himself to work out, Chris says, "I look at my obliques" (Mar 28 2000). Despite this, if he had to gain weight for a role, Christopher says he "would welcome such a challenge" (Mar 4 2000). In his exercise program, Christopher prefers "Muay Thai kickboxing, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, boxing" (Sept 7 2001), although he says that his boxing lessons "are too few and far between" (Mar 4 2000) and that he would like to "find time for a regular basketball run" (Mar 4 2000).

Chris works out at a gym, not at home (Oct 28 2000). He also did not use the gym set on the Oz lot for his own workouts: "Gym time is very much a meditation exercise for me. I need to concentrate without looking over my shoulder to see if I'll be called to set" (Aug 21 2000). What he wears to the gym depends on what he'll be doing and he listens to Tool during the workout (Oct 28 2000).

He has also been asked about his regime. In general, he sticks to "lots a weights, a little pasta" (Oct 28 2002). To stay muscular, he does "weights, running and kickboxing" (Mar 4 2000). On how he's managed to get "the six pack and the great butt muscles," Chris replied, "The abs are courtesy of endless crunches. The ass is genetic" (June 10 2000).

The actual number of days per week that Chris has managed to work out has varied over the years. He has weight-trained three times a week (when lucky) (May 8 2001), gone up to working out six days per week (May 22 2002), then dropped to weight-lifting and running three to five days per week (Sept 28 2003). Most recently, Christopher has said that he lifts weights four times per week, when he's focused, and added, "I'll see if I can do an interrogation scene in my undies so you can see my quads (I've been working on them very hard)" (Sept 8 2004). Despite all this, Chris says he has no idea how much he can benchpress, adding "I don't really bench anymore" (Apr 2 2004).

Running is his least favourite exercise when working out (Mar 4 2000); Christopher says that he does jog, "hating every step of the way" (Nov 9 2001). Sadly, Chris does not jog shirtless (Nov 9 2001).

Christopher does not like spicy food and on an average day, he has said that he eats "four egg whites, meat, cereal or toast" for breakfast (Aug 13 2000), but doesn't take any supplements (Mar 4 2000). As far as junk food goes, Chris says that he last had a "Burger King Super Deluxe whatever in 1985" (Jan 26 2001).

As far as commercial diet programs go, Chris says that it's "capitalism at its worst (best?). America is fat - fact. Sell 'em weight loss in every gimmick-wrapped package you can" (Jan 20 2005).

When asked how to design an exercise program, Christopher said that the key is "variety. Lift one day, yoga another, kick ass another, etc." (Aug 28 2001) Given this response, it is not surprising that Chris incorporates martial arts in his program. When asked about his teachers, Chris said, "I've worked with Walt Lang in Tae Kwon Do, Ed Monahan in Goshin Jiu-Jitsu, and Phil Nurse in Thai kickboxing" (Nov 14 2003). His former instructor, Walt Lang, sent in this question: "I would like to ask Chris if he has kept up with the martial arts. I was his instructor at the University of Colorado, and he was quite talented." Christopher replied, "Sensei. Started Goshin Jiu-Jitsu and Thai kickboxing, but I started with you and it meant a lot" (July 24 2000).

Christopher holds "belts in Tae Kwon Do, Goshin Jiu-Jitsu" and is "into Muay Thai kickboxing these days" (Mar 28 2000). Chris was a blue belt in Goshin Jiu-Jitsu as of Aug 21 2000 and said, "We do Gracie grappling techniques" in that martial art. As of April 2, 2004, he was a blue belt in Tae Kwon Do and had gotten his green belt in Goshin Jiu-Jitsu. Despite all of this, Chris denies being a person who excels at martial arts, preferring to describe himself as a dabbler in martial arts (Apr 11 2000). He also agreed with a fan who commented that studying martial arts increases one's confidence; Chris added, "Understanding the science of protecting oneself gives one peace of mind" (Apr 20 2005).

He has also tried to incorporate a yoga practice in his regimen. When asked when he got into yoga, Chris replied "I'm not really into it, I scuttle along the fringe. I started about two years ago" (May 18 2000). More recently, Chris has said that he has "no time" for yoga and adds that this makes him "sad" (Apr 5 2005).
