Chris's general attitude towards fame is that it is "a perk you have to manage - like candy" (June 26 2000) and that it is "an illusion. It's the sheer numbers that sometimes follow that can be a big, deep pit of shit that props you up...waiting for the sinkage..." (March 7 2001). Chris has also said that he's "O.K. with fame," because he does not think he's famous (Aug 9 2000). Chris admits that it "would have been tougher" for him to handle his current level of career success if it had come when he was in his 20s (Apr 11 2000). He has said, "When I was younger, I wanted to be famous. Now, I just want to work" (Dec 27 1999). When asked again whether he wanted to be famous, Chris responded, "No, I wanted to be good. I figured that if that happens, other things will fall into place" (Oct 29 2001). When a fan asked whether fame motivates an actor "to achieve success," Chris said, "I don't know - success is defined differently by different people. Is Tom Cruise more successful than Ian McKellen? Is Harrison Ford more successful than Derek Jacobi?" (June 26 2000) Chris says that he appreciates both "when someone appreciates my work" and when his fame gets him a table in a restaurant without a reservation (Dec 27 1999; Sept 26 2002) and into a nightclub or boxing match (June 26 2000). When asked if he would give up being famous (provided that he could still make the same amount of money as an actor), Chris said, "Fame is great for getting tables at restaurants, but sure, no fame, no problem" (Sept 26 2002). Being recognized is "pretty cool" (Mar 2 2000). Although being famous means that "people will help you out more readily," it is also "distracting to have the recognition antennae up all the time" (Oct 29 2001). Chris elaborates, "The only thing about fame is that I now think twice before going out in public. I have to decide if it's worth it. But it's all good. People are very nice, but quiet is nice" (Aug 1 2004). When asked whether being a "household-name celebrity" would change him, Chris replied, "Oh sure, it'll change me. I'm ready to be fucking fabulous" (Mar 28 2000). Christopher responded more seriously when he was asked what he thinks of "celebrity" and "the focus of the American public on the minutiae of celebrity lives." He said, "To quote Elvis Costello, 'Everything means less than zero,' pertaining to the point at hand" (Oct 29 2001). When a fan asked which three celebrities he would choose if he had live on a desert island with them, Chris replied, "I'd rather be on an island with cardboard cut-outs. Celebrities are media-made creations...it bores me. No offense" (Aug 26 2000). Last updated: March 04/06 | ||
