Keller & Beecher (also see Lee Tergesen)

When made aware of how the Beecher-Keller story would develop, Christopher says, "I wanted to do it because it was Tom Fontana and then later because it was Lee" (Aug 23 2000). What contributed to the successful portrayal of that relationship was "two actors that truly like and respect each other and a trust in Fontana. Piece a cake" (Mar 2 2000). Chris thinks the relationship is embraced because "people are celebrating the mere fact that a homosexual relationship, however dysfunctional, is being examined in a public forum through TV" (Jan 12 2001).

When Keller first met Beecher, Chris says that Keller "had a job to do" (Oct 9 2001). But Chris knew Keller was moving away from manipulating Beecher (and towards having real feelings for him instead) during "the five-second scene where Keller is remorseful in his cell at night" (June 8 2001). Chris says that the first Beecher-Keller kiss is his favourite: "First love only comes around once" (Nov 1 2001) and that the two characters' kiss at the end of Season 3 was done in only one take (Mar 4 2000). As for who's on top, Christopher says that it's "the one who likes to pitch" (Sept 22 2001). Of the episodes involving the character Katherine McClain (who comes between Keller and Beecher), Chris says that he "loved that storyline, even though Lee and I had to do some couples therapy over it" (Sept 26 2002).

Chris says that he's aware of and has read "very little" of the fan fiction written about the characters he plays; he has no idea what's written, but has no discomfort with or feeling about any of it (Mar 2 2000; Nov 16 2004). As a viewer, Chris has found "Beecher's journey" and the "Beecher/Keller relationship" the most interesting on Oz (May 5 2000).

If Beecher and Keller had met outside of Oz, Chris says that Keller would have envied "Beecher's privilege," while Beecher would have envied Keller's "bravado and street smarts" (Feb 27 2004). If it were up to Chris to write an ending for Keller and Beecher, he would "have them break out of Oz together, run and hide, and assume new names and identities. Keller would run a laundromat and Beecher would be a stay-at-home kinda wife" (Sept 18 2001). According to Chris, a spin-off from Oz would be "Leave it to Beecher. Lee runs a dry-cleaning service. We live together. Watch the sparks fly when we troll the Chelsea bar scene" (Oct 9 2002). As a 10th anniversary gift, Keller would give Beecher "a whole day at Helena Rubenstein spa. And then a beating" (Oct 19 2001).

Random fact: Beecher and Keller's song is Prison Sex, by Tool (Nov 7 2001).
