Christopher is turned off by "ignorance dressed up as ideology…ah, fuck it, any ideology" (Apr 13 2000). In fact, when asked whether he would refuse to play a part due to his beliefs, Chris replied, "I don't believe in smug, sanctimonious a-holes, so I would not play Jerry Falwell" (Mar 4 2000). When asked whether he thinks Dr. Laura is "merely misguided or the Antichrist," Chris said that she is a "self-righteous do-gooder who would sell her soul for ratings/attention...uh, but the answer is: it's all just very, very sad" (Oct 19 2000). When asked about former D.C. mayor Marion Barry, Chris said, "I just know what Marion Barry did to the city and the people he was supposed to serve" (June 1 2001).

Christopher says he's not a Republican (Nov 14 2003) and thinks that Bill Clinton should not have been impeached (Mar 3 2000). During the 2000 election campaign, when asked to choose between Al Gore and George W. Bush, Chris replied, "Nader" (Oct 17 2000)and when asked whether he thought Bush or Gore would win the election, Chris responded, "O boy…how can one question depress me so?" (Oct 19 2000)

In the end, Chris did not vote in the 2000 presidential election (Dec 16 2000). He said then that "the only difference between Bush and Gore is the velocity at which they fall to their knees for corporate America - thank you, Ralph Nader" (Dec 15 2000) and that the Electoral College should be dumped (Dec 4 2000). More recently, Chris has said that he would like to see John McCain elected president in 2008 (Jan 12 2005) and elaborated that this comment was "dead serious. He's a serious man. And a hero" (Mar 20 2005).

Chris is pro-choice (Oct 17 2000), saying, "Abortion is a woman's choice. Third trimester abortion, I have my doubts about" (Sept 29 2003). He does not think that the death penalty is a deterrent "except in the fact there is not a documented case where a dead murderer has ever committed another crime" (July 30 2000). More recently, he has confirmed that he "agrees" with the death penalty, but adds, "Whether it's being administered correctly is another thing" (Sept 29 2003; Apr 20 2005). When it comes to some of the types of cases dealt with on Law and Order: SVU, Chris says, "I'd have no problem expanding the death penalty in many of these types of cases" (Sept 29 2003). However, he says that the courts should decide whether there should be separate laws that would apply specifically to people who commit crimes against their abusers (and that would be different from the laws that apply to other perpetrators) (May 18 2001). Chris does not think that the United States Supreme Court is "composed primarily of evil cretins," as one fan put it, saying instead, "They are great legal minds (well, seven or eight of the nine) whose political leanings can't help but bleed into their votes. It's all so transparent" (Jan 12 2001).

Christopher favours laws requiring sex offenders to register: "The recidivism rate for molesters is one of the highest for all types of offenders. Register, baby" (Nov 14 2000). He says that prostitution should be legalized, but "under certain guidelines, à la Amsterdam" (Apr 10 2001). Chris has said that marijuana should be legalized (Sept 28 2000), but later clarified that he actually meant that marijuana should be "just not prosecuted" (Mar 3 2001). [This most likely means that he thinks the drug should be decriminalized. - Editor] As for weapons, Chris says, "I don't think we need handguns" (Sept 7 2001).

In cases of major corporate fraud, Chris thinks that there should be "prison terms in maximum-security prisons, 10 to 20 years, for the boys running the show. Ken Lay should be in prison. If yer being paid that much money to run the ship, then ya should know how the thing's being run" (Sept 12 2002). He was in favour of a commercial actors' strike: "The cost to the ad biz for actors' services accounts for about 0.002% of the ad budget. This is an industry that had a 15% revenue increase last year. This is corporate America squeezing the little guy. At least in construction, you can make a living. Here, yer dealing with people who make about $7000/year and the big boys are looking to squeeze THAT down" (Oct 19 2000).

Christopher was living in New York on September 11, 2001 and lost his best friend in the terrorist attacks (Sept 22 2001). Regarding the attacks and their aftermath, he said, "Sorry, I'm not answering anything that has to do with Sept. 11, except to say I think Giuliani has done a great job" (Sept 22 2001).

If he could make certain historical decisions differently to change the fate of a country or city, Chris would have had "no colonization of Third World countries, would have whacked Saddam in '91, would make a Palestinian state along with Israel. Why? Just 'cuz" (Dec 6 2001). To bring peace to the Middle East, he would have halted "all new Jewish settlements in occupied areas" and he would have found "the alternative to Arafat" (Sept 26 2002).

Random fact: Chris is a fan of the Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam Veterans memorials (Jan 14 2002).
