Wet Hot American Summer

Chris decided to do Wet Hot American Summer because he "thought the script was weird" (June 14 2000) and has said that it was the "funniest" movie he’s had to make (Apr 29 2001). To get the part, Chris "had to audition like anyone else" (Oct 28 2002).

In the movie, Christopher's does a number of odd things. In one scene, he delivers a climactic speech, then humps a refrigerator; Chris says they filmed the speech-making scene in "two or three takes" (Jan 26 2001). When asked what real-life experience he drew on for the fridge-humping scene, Chris answered, "I once loved a salad shooter" (Jan 26 2001). As well, things seem to have gotten serious between him and that appliance. He explains, "Well, things progressed, as these things do, and…I'm now the proud father of two ice trays" (Nov 15 2004). His character also talks to a can, an experience Chris says was "almost as satisfying as humping a fridge" (Mar 29 2002).

In response to a very negative critique of the movie, Chris said, "Everyone has an opinion. Can't tell you how many people have told me it was the best movie of the year, so there you have it, Mr. Ebert" (Sept 29 2003). Another fan loved Chris's work as Gene the cook (the fan mentioned quoting Gene's lines in class to cut the tedium) and asked what inspired Chris's performance. Chris responded, "Any time one's quotes are used to break the tedium...well, I think that is the mark of having made it. The inspiration came from the writing and my interpretation of the words and from the hope that you would be uttering the stuff long after I had shot it" (Feb 18 2002).

RANDOM FACTS

The woman listed in the movie's credits as "Gene's wife" is the woman with whom Gene the cook is speaking during the talent show scene (in the background). He also drives away with her at the end of the movie (Feb 12 2001).
