Known for his intense performances, Christopher Meloni has put his
unwavering stare to good use, whether it's a comedy ("Wet Hot
American Summer") or a drama (HBO's prison series "Oz"). But for the
past few years, Meloni's most prominent role has been as Detective
Elliot Stabler on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
This summer, Meloni plans to spend much-needed time with wife Sherman
and their kids, Sophia, 4, and Dante, 14 months. He calls their
three-bedroom home on New York's Upper West Side a "cookie-cutter,
wannabe pre-war" apartment they bought for "the view, the view, the
view. We're 20 stories up and you can see the Hudson River."
- One thing on your nightstand: A stack of 20 books. Now I'm reading
"Parting the Desert: The Creation of the Suez Canal" by Zachary
Karabell.
- One thing on a wall in your living room: A prayer rug I got on a
trip to Turkey.
- Three condiments we would find in your refrigerator: Spicy
mustard, apricot jelly and ketchup for the kids.
- Three things we would find in your medicine cabinet: Cocaine, but
it's prescription -- just kidding! An electric nose-hair clipper
that's on the blink, five of the same deodorant because it's the only
kind I like and a shaver that's rusting since I don't shave at home
[during filming].
- Do your dirty dishes go in the sink or dishwasher? Unfortunately,
the sink.
- Maker of your everyday dinnerware? Are you kidding me?
- Maker of your fine china? I don't think we have anything. When we
got married, that was one of the things we put on the list of things
to get us, and I think we ended up with just one setting.
- What is the biggest collection in your home? It's a tossup between
family photos and dirty diapers.
- What reading material would we find in your bathroom? "Catholicism
for Dummies," "The Wine Bible" and one of those
everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about books by Bill Bryson.
- Most embarrassing thing in your home that you hide when guests
come over? My abrasive demeanor.
